US LNG Impact Study
The US LNG industry has grown from a niche export market into a cornerstone of global energy supply, and with that growth has come intense scrutiny over its environmental and economic implications. S&P Global, led by our Energy Transition team, published this study to provide a rigorous, independent assessment of the sector at a pivotal moment for US energy policy and international climate commitments.
The emissions analysis at the heart of the report employs the most advanced observational data available on methane leakage and flaring to differentiate the greenhouse gas intensity of LNG across global supply sources. Rather than relying on modeled assumptions, we integrated real-world measurements and transparent lifecycle accounting to surface meaningful variation in emissions practices across regions and operators, offering a more honest picture of LNG's true climate footprint than prior industry assessments had provided.
The study's methodological approach sets a new standard for emissions transparency in the LNG sector, equipping policymakers, financiers, and energy buyers with the data needed to make informed decisions about sourcing and climate strategy. The findings underscore that frequent, reliable monitoring is not just a best practice but a prerequisite for any credible accounting of the energy transition's progress.
